I have a special blog post for you tonight...my storage system! When I first started collecting polish almost two years ago, I never dreamed I would ever own enough polishes to have to worry about having a legitimate storage system to house them all in. But polishes seem to have a way of multiplying magically when I'm not looking! ;)
I initially started off with a "melmer" from Michael's (also known as a "storage cube" lol). Each drawer in a melmer can hold approximately 100 polishes. I outgrew that almost a year ago and for the past year, I had been putting my overflow polishes on top of my melmer or in my night stand drawers haha.
Here's some super old pics of my melmer storage before my polish stash grew exponentially:
All of this is kept within a bedroom closet on top of an antique steamer trunk. My old melmer is on the left and I used to keep my makeup in the Sterilite containers you see on top of the melmer and to the right of the melmer. These pictures were taken welllll before my stash multiplied.
When I informed my hubby in August of 2011 that I had outgrown my melmer and wanted to purchase an Ikea Helmer (which can hold up to 600 polishes), he scoffed and said "I can build you something better but it'll have to wait until next summer because I have to do the work outside". So I waited patiently and summer finally rolled around again. The hubby and I started discussing my plans and needs for a new system. He had an absolutely brilliant idea: rather than using Sterilite containers to store my makeup in, he could make the top of my storage system open up and I could keep my makeup all in one place with less clutter. I was super excited at that idea since digging through the Sterilite containers had become very tedious. I also have quite an extensive blush collection and the hubby had another wonderful idea: making blush slots within the top compartment so I wouldn't have to go digging every time I needed a blush and could have them displayed so they were easy to identify quickly.
I waffled back and forth for a while about what material on wanted to use to build my new storage system out of. Initially, I wanted to go with a nice sturdy oak, but the hubby informed me that it would cost me twice as much money to build with oak than it would be to use MDF sheets. Since I'm not made of money and the storage system would still be living in my closet, I opted to go for the MDF. It actually ended up working out for the best since we found some color-morphing paint and were able to use that on the new system. I absolutely adore it, it looks awesome!
A feature I really enjoy about my new system are the drawer sliders that fully extend (so I can see and reach all the way to the back of the drawers) and are strong enough to carry the weight of hundreds of polishes without fear of the drawer or system falling over. I have to say, it is really nice to be able to open my drawers and not have to hear the scraping of drawers against other drawers like my melmer used to do. Anyone who owns or has owned a melmer probably knows exactly what I'm talking about when I say that lol.
The new system's drawers can hold approximately 400 bottles of polish each per drawer, for a total of 1,600 polishes...that's more than twice the storage capacity of an Ikea Helmer! I am so pleased, my stash has a lot of room to grow now and I have much less clutter to deal with. I am such a spoiled woman and I am so lucky to have such a handy hubby! Much love to him! If anyone might be wondering, it took my hubby approximately one week to build this. He pretty much spent every spare moment he had out in our garage or back yard working on it.
Anyway, enough with the chatter! Here are some pics of the finished product AND some video of the color-morphing paint we used. I hope you guys love it as much as I do! ^_^
Here's a picture I took of it outside on my deck...the stick holding up the top compartment is not permanent. Just used it to hold it open while we took the picture.
From a different angle...the slots on both sides of the top compartment are for my blushes!
Here's a really crappy pic I took of the finished product in its new home, my bedroom closet on top of the steamer trunk. The closet doors have to be open as far as they can go, just so I can get to it haha. It's THAT big! O.o
K, so it was really hard to get all of this in one pic because it is so freaking big haha. Here's the top makeup compartment with all of my makeup in it. I might re-arrange it some more eventually, but it works for now. As you can see, almost all of my blushes are now in their little slots. Neat huh?
In the first drawer, I have indies and HE polishes on the left and Laylas, Cult Nails and Hits on the far right.
The second drawer is strictly OPI polishes! Look at all that growing room!
The third drawer is China Glaze, Orly, Nfu Oh and Jade polishes.
The fourth drawer is a little bit of everything...to name just a few: Sally Hansen, Essence, Verity, Ozotic, Nicole by OPI, Chemistry. I also keep frankens that I've made and frankens that have been gifted to me in this drawer!
Here's a video showing off the multichrome paint, as promised!
Well, that's about it! As always, thanks for stopping by...hope everyone has a great weekend! <3
